Online A level physics course overview

Students of the Edexcel A level physics online course will be expected to demonstrate and apply the knowledge, understanding and skills described below. In addition, they will be expected to analyse, interpret and evaluate a range of scientific information, ideas and evidence using their knowledge, understanding and skills.

  • Physical quantities and units; measurement techniques
  • Kinematics; dynamics; forces, density and pressure; work, energy and power; deformation of solids
  • Waves; superposition; electric fields; current of electricity; D.C. circuits; particle and nuclear physics
  • Motion in a circle; gravitational fields; ideal gases; temperature; thermal properties of materials; oscillations;
  • Communication; capacitance; electronics; magnetic fields; electromagnetic induction; alternating currents; quantum physics

Students of the Edexcel physics A level course will sit three written papers.

Additional practical skills components will be available; offering a practical endorsement that goes alongside the A-Level qualification. The student will gain an additional certificate of competency.

Prior learning

There are no prior learning or other requirements for this qualification. Students who would benefit most from studying this qualification are likely to have a Level 2 qualification. This might be a GCSE in Double Award Science or Physics, for example.

Progression

Students can progress from this qualification to:

  • A range of different relevant academic or vocational higher education qualifications
  • Employment in a relevant sector
  • Further training

In the October of year 11, 12 and 13 parents and guardians will receive an email asking which exams the learner intends to take, and where they would like to take them. Parents and guardians must inform King’s InterHigh if they need assistance finding an exam centre by mid-October.

King’s InterHigh can support you in finding a local exam centre. It is then down to the individual to register with the centre of choice and pay the exam fees to the centre directly. As each exam centre sets their own fees we cannot provide accurate pricing, however as an example, you can see our own fees by clicking here

Access arrangements

Physical, medical or learning support needs may be eligible for access arrangements during exams. These can include:

  • Extra time of 25%*
  • Extra time up to 50%*
  • A reader*
  • A scribe*
  • Supervised rest breaks
  • Separate room
  • Use of a laptop
  • Enlarged print exam papers

*These arrangements must be approved by the exam board. The learner will need to undertake learning assessments with an educational psychologist or specialist assessor in order to complete the application form. These assessments can take up to 18 months to process.

The deadline for application to the exam board is the February of the year that the learner sits exams.

Physics A Levels FAQs

Some consider A Level physics to be a difficult subject. Unlike some subjects, doing well in physics can depend on your ability to understand concepts, rather than just relying on good factual recall. Getting a good grasp of the concepts can help you do well.

Despite the challenging aspects, physics is a compelling subject which many learners find fascinating and essential for their future careers.

In A Level physics, you’ll explore the theories behind the observable universe. The course combines practical skills and theory so you can describe physical space.

You’ll study topics including cosmology, kinematics, and particle physics. It’s a great subject for anyone interested in the limits of space, the start of time, and everything there is in between. Calculations are a big part of A Level physics, so it helps if you have some skill with algebra. Descriptive work also requires you to be able to communicate clearly in your written assignments.

There are no formal entry requirements for A Level physics at King’s InterHigh. However, we recommend you only apply to study physics at A Level if you’re predicted to achieve grade 7 or higher in this subject at GCSE or IGCSE.

Other education providers may have different requirements. For example, they may ask for grades 4 and above in GCSE physics and maths, so make sure to check.

Physics helps you develop your problem-solving, research and analytical skills. These are useful in any role that involves research or debate. A physics A Level is also helpful for studying STEM subjects, and can lead to careers in:

  • Software engineer
  • Meteorologist
  • Medical physics
  • Astronomy
  • Academic research

At King’s InterHigh, there are no formal entry requirements for studying A Level physics. We do however recommend you have at least a grade 7 in this subject at GCSE or IGCSE.
