Key Stage 3 - Computer Science

Year 9 Computer Science

Our course

KS3 Computer Science allows students to explore the systems and structures of computers and networks, including technological developments and the ethical dilemmas of safety and responsibility.

Course structure:

During the course students will develop an awareness and understanding of computational thinking, algorithms, programming, representing text, images and sound, hardware and software, communication, and online safety.

Students will explore computational theories and processes as abstract concepts, problem solving strategies, and as design elements in their own solutions.

Assessment:

Student progress is measured by both formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments take place regularly and in a variety of formats ranging from group discussions and collaboration, written tasks, quizzes, and presentations. Students complete one summative assessment each half-term in which they are required to demonstrate their understanding of a topic by completing a test, creating a product or presenting an enquiry process, evaluation and conclusion.

Example topics

  • Computer systems
  • Patterns and algorithms
  • Sorting and sequencing
