How we teach the IB online

Our online student-led learning model supports all the core attributes of an International Baccalaureate® education, from independent inquiry to open-minded communication.

Students begin each topic with their own research, developing their understanding through collaborative exploration and expert knowledge. We also bring in a variety of elements to enhance the educational experience, from VR learning to projects away from the computer.

How would you like to get in touch?

Studying the IB online

From September 2022, it is now possible to study the IB Diploma Programme entirely online. In collaboration with the International Baccalaureate®, King’s InterHigh is the world’s first and only online school to bring a fully online course to students aged 16-19 across the world, launched as a two-year pilot.

Studying the International Baccalaureate online takes place through a timetable of live and interactive classes taught every school day. Students will enjoy a full timetable of lessons and independent learning opportunities. Uniquely, recordings of lessons available are at any time 24/7, to assist with revision, and also provide the flexibility to allow you to catch up if you miss a lesson. Elements of the online IB Diploma will be delivered through cutting-edge technology, such as Virtual Reality (VR), to allow students to study immersively and explore subjects in depth.

Complementing the use of VR and other outstanding technology is that fact that the course is taught by expert course writers and teachers, with years of experience in delivering IB in other successful schools. The online curriculum is exciting and broad and certain to offer students a high-quality experience and internationally recognised qualifications.

Studying the IB online will allow students across the world to access this respected international qualification, even when it’s not available at their local school. Joining the global King’s InterHigh community will give our students access to a wealth of co-curricular activities, clubs, and pastoral care, as well as the expert guidance of IB specialist teachers. More insight into why you should study the IB online can be discovered here.

The two-year International Baccalaureate® Diploma Programme, for students aged 16-19, is the only IB programme currently available entirely online. The international qualification is recognised worldwide by institutions and universities as a rigorous curriculum that prepares students for independent learning and future studies. It is firmly one of the best preparations students can have for future study at top universities.

The IB Diploma is an alternative education pathway to studying A Levels for Sixth Form students. The subjects covered within the curriculum are broader than the A Level British curriculum, so it can be a good choice for students who haven’t yet decided the avenue they would like to follow or for those wishing not to specialise too soon.

Studying the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) virtually, students will experience live lessons delivered by IB expert teachers, as well as the full guidance, support and pastoral care that you would expect in a physical school environment.

In an online IB programme, students will study the same IB curriculum that is taught across physical IB World Schools across the globe.

The subjects that students cover as part of the IB Diploma follows the same structure as that in physical schools. Over two years, students study six subjects of their choice, across the following subject groups:

  • Languages and Literature;
  • Language Acquisition;
  • Individuals and Societies;
  • Sciences;
  • Mathematics;
  • The Arts.

Within these six subjects, there are advanced levels and standard levels. Students tend to study three subjects at an advanced level, and three at standard level. Within the groups above, King’s InterHigh is able to offer different subjects to engage students in the learning they enjoy and want to pursue further.

In addition to this, all students will study the DP Core – an exciting programme that broadens students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills.

  1. Theory of knowledge (ToK) is a taught unit that develops critical thinking and learning across their chosen subjects. Students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know, with significant benefits to their wider studies
  2. The extended essay (EE) is an independent, self-directed piece of research allowing students to further investigate an area of interest. Creativity, activity, service (CAS) in which students complete projects and experiences related to those three concepts.

Creativity, activity and service (CAS) is one of the three essential elements that all students must complete as part of the core section of the Diploma Programme. It is not formally assessed, yet involves a range of activities from which students provide evidence of achieving the seven learning outcomes. This includes projects such as: creating artwork, organising training for a sports team, volunteering in the local community, working on charity projects or learning a new skill.

As part of any IB programme, CAS activities are mostly conducted independently by the learner, guided and supported by a dedicated CAS coordinator. This is no different within an online setting – our dedicated coordinator will support students’ projects wherever they are in the world, and they will perform and document the activities in their local environment, to form the evidence for the CAS portfolio.

A student doing the full IB Diploma will sit an exam for each of their six subjects, taken in-person at an IB World School during May in the second year. IB final exams typically make up about 75% of the students’ final course mark, but the exact percentage varies from course to course. The remaining element is made up of coursework or portfolio work.

For the two-year IB Diploma course, students will commence their studies online at the beginning of the academic year in September – we cannot accept new joiners past the end of October. However, our A Level courses retain the option to joint at any time.

The first cohort to study the IB Diploma online began in September 2022, but there’s still time to join. Complete the contact form to begin registration and complete enrolment by 31st October 2022 to join us this year.

If you are considering joining us to start in September 2024, register your interest now and we will be in touch when enrolment opens.
